Most Middle Tennessee downtowns run August on a single-weekend clock. One fair, one festival, one square that fills for a few hours, and the rest of the month goes quiet. Downtown Clarksville does something different. It spreads the same energy across three named weeknights, every week, and then lands the whole month on one Saturday afternoon on Fairview Lane.
If you already live here, that pattern is worth naming, because it changes how you plan. You do not have to pick "the weekend" downtown gets busy. There is a Thursday version, a Friday version, and a Saturday version, and they do not compete with each other. They stack.
The August stack, at a glance

None of these are one-off August specials. They are the standing calendar. What August does is pile a few extras on top, most importantly the Aug. 29 Taste of Clarksville, and push the weekly rhythm into its densest month before the September step-down.
Saturday morning is the load-bearing wall
If you only do one downtown thing a week in August, do the Saturday market. The market runs on Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and its 2026 season will kick off on May 9, running through October 3. That gives you a fixed four-hour window on Public Square, and August is the middle of the tomato-and-stone-fruit stretch, so it is arguably the strongest month of the season for produce.
Two numbers to hold onto. Since the Market's introduction, it has grown from 16 vendors to over 80. And in 2020, the Clarksville Downtown Market was voted the #1 Market in Tennessee for the 10th straight season and the #1 Market in America for the first time through the American Farmland Trust organization. The scale is not a small-town-market scale anymore. Plan for 80-plus tents on a hot morning, which means arriving before 9 if you actually want to move through it comfortably.
A few practical notes for August specifically:
- Come in from the north or south lot rather than trying to circle Public Square. Parking on the square itself fills quickly after 8:30.
- The shade thins toward the middle of the lot. Vendors along the edges are the ones you want to visit first if you plan to linger.
- Look for the Sensory Station booths if you are bringing kids who get overwhelmed by the crowd. It is a standing feature of the market, not a special-event add-on.
If you want to make Saturday feel like a full outing rather than a run in and out, the market ends right around brunch, and downtown has held onto enough sit-down capacity that you rarely wait more than a few minutes for a table at 12:15.
The Thursday split
Thursday is where downtown quietly does the most work all week, and it is the day most residents underuse.
The first Thursday of the month is the Art Walk, which in August lands on the 6th. First Thursday Art Walk: First Thursdays, 5-8 p.m. in downtown Clarksville. Free self-guided tour that combines visual art, live music, engaging events and more. Rain or shine. Treat it as a slow route, not a checklist. Galleries and studios along Franklin Street and Strawberry Alley are the through-line, and most participating spots stay open past the official 8 p.m. cutoff if there is still a crowd on the sidewalk.
Every other Thursday in August, the same evening slot belongs to two competing anchors. The first is at Downtown Commons at 215 Legion St., where free live music runs from 6 to 8 p.m. on select Thursdays from August through October. The second is at Old Glory Distilling Co., which runs its own outdoor market and vendor night. Taking place each Thursday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, starting April 16 and continuing through November 5, this market combines the best of local vendors, live music, and the inviting atmosphere of Old Glory Distilling Co.
The two do not overlap in feel. Downtown Commons is family-scale, kids on the lawn, folding chairs. Old Glory is more of an adult-evening market with cocktails available. Pick one per Thursday and you have a low-effort, low-cost weekly rhythm that most out-of-towners never see.
Friday belongs to Downtown Commons
The Friday anchor is the Downtown @ Sundown concert series. The Downtown @ Sundown Concert Series will be held on select Fridays May through October. Not every Friday in August has a concert, so check the Downtown Commons calendar before you commit, but the ones that do are the closest thing downtown has to a "the whole town is here" night outside of Taste of Clarksville itself.
The reason Friday works is that it borrows nothing from Saturday. You can do the Sundown concert until 10, sleep in until 7:30, and still be at the market by 8:15 with a full four-hour window ahead of you. The two events sit on top of each other in the same six-block footprint without competing for the same hours.
If a Friday does not have a Sundown concert, the second-tier option is Beachaven Vineyards & Winery at 1100 Dunlop Lane, which runs live music from 4-7 Fridays and Saturdays, 2-5 p.m. Sundays. It is technically outside the downtown core, but for a Friday-evening pivot when the Commons is dark, it is the closest thing to a same-feel replacement.
The month lands on August 29
Every other Saturday in August is a market Saturday. The last one is not. Taste of Clarksville is the anchor the rest of the month bends around, and this year it hits its fifth edition.
Taste of Clarksville, the annual food-focused festival celebrating local culinary talent and small businesses, officially returns on Saturday, Aug. 29, from noon-5 p.m. at its original home, 301 Fairview Lane. This year's festival will feature up to 20 outdoor food trucks and tents, along with 10-12 indoor vendor spaces.
Two things to plan for. First, this is not a market-morning-then-taste-in-the-afternoon day. The Saturday Downtown Market on Public Square runs 8 to noon, and Taste opens at noon on Fairview Lane. It is the one Saturday of the month where the pattern most residents run all summer, market first and coffee after, gets replaced with market first and Fairview Lane after. Give yourself a 20-minute buffer between the two.
Second, the lineup is a mix of returning champions and newer names, and the newer names are worth targeting first because the returning champions pull the longest lines. The 2026 event features returning champions such as Island Jerk Flava (2024 Dinner & Vegan Champion), Windy City Vibez (2024 Food Truck Winner), LA Street Dogs (2024 Hot Dog Winner), and Chillz Italian Ice (2024 Frozen Treat Winner). Joining the lineup are local creators including Fryz Wit Dat, J&D Smokers, Juicy Butts BBQ, El Jefe's Burgers, Athena Greek Cafe, C&W BBQ, Big Daddy's Southern Chicken and Fish, DJ's Famous Lemonade and Links, ALIA Shaved Ice. Practical sequencing: hit two of the newer names in your first hour, then queue for one of the champions, then loop back.
When August heat wins, go up
Not every August Saturday cooperates. The one downtown pattern that works in a 96-degree afternoon is going up rather than out. Shelby's Trio, across from F&M Bank Arena, stacks three concepts on three floors. Start your journey at Joe's Garage, where muscle cars meet American cuisine, a lively bar, and inviting outdoor seating. Also, Joe's Garage is home to the only Michael Waltrip Brewing Signature Bar in Tennessee! On the second floor is Trattoria di Cat, a cozy Italian steakhouse with intimate dining spaces. The rooftop bar runs Leatherwood Distillery cocktails, small bites and breathtaking rooftop views, which is the play when it is too hot to walk between venues but you still want to be downtown.
The other reliable indoor pivot is Strawberry Alley Ale Works, which holds burgers, weekend brunch, balcony river views, and a wide selection of craft brews and does not require a reservation for two people on a normal Saturday.
A workable August, sequenced
If you want a single week that captures what August downtown can actually deliver, here is one shape:
- Thursday, Aug. 6: Art Walk from 5 to 8, dinner after at Trattoria di Cat.
- Saturday, Aug. 8: Downtown Market at 8, home by noon.
- Thursday, Aug. 13: Old Glory market at 5, no plans after.
- Friday, Aug. 14: Check Downtown Commons for a Sundown concert. If dark, Beachaven from 4 to 7.
- Saturday, Aug. 15: Market at 8, then Strawberry Alley Ale Works for brunch on the balcony.
- Saturday, Aug. 29: Market at 8, Taste of Clarksville at noon, home by 5.
That is six anchored outings in a single month without leaving a six-block radius twice, and without paying for parking more than a few dollars total.
August is the last full month before the September step-down. The market ends its season on Oct. 3, the Sundown series wraps in October, and by the time the leaves turn, downtown quiets down again. The best thing about the way this town runs August is that you do not have to do all of it. You just have to know the stack is there.
